Some Acoustic Cues for Categorizing American English Regional Dialects: An Initial Report on Dialect Variation in Production and Perception1

چکیده
Phonological differences between regional dialects of American English are well established in the sociolinguistics literature. The perception of these phonological differences by naïve listeners is much less well understood, however. Using an existing corpus of spoken sentences produced by talkers from a number of distinct regional dialects in the United States, an acoustic analysis was conducted in Experiment I to confirm that certain phonetic features differentiate the dialects. Results provided further evidence for predictable phonological differences between dialects. In Experiment II recordings of the sentences were played to naïve listeners who were asked to categorize each talker into one of six geographical dialect regions. Results suggested that listeners are able to reliably categorize talkers into three broad dialect clusters, but have more difficulty accurately categorizing talkers into six smaller regions. Correlations between the acoustic measures and both actual dialect affiliation of the talkers and dialect categorization of the talkers by the listeners revealed that the listeners in this study were, for the most part, able to reliably use acoustic-phonetic features of the dialects in categorizing the talkers. Taken together, the results of these experiments suggested that naïve listeners are sensitive to phonological differences between dialects and can use these differences to categorize talkers by dialect.

Perceptual Similarity of Unfamiliar Regional Dialects: Some Preliminary Findings
Linguistic experience has been shown to affect the perception of regional dialect variation. This pilot study examined the effect of familiarity on the perceived similarity of regional dialects. Native speakers of American English completed a paired comparison perceptual similarity rating task with a group of unfamiliar regional dialects. Speakers of American English were asked to make explicit...
متن کاملThe Nationwide Speech Project: A new corpus of American English dialects
Perceptual and acoustic research on dialect variation in the United States requires an appropriate corpus of spoken language materials. Existing speech corpora that include dialect variation are limited by poor recording quality, small numbers of talkers, and/or small samples of speech from each talker. The Nationwide Speech Project corpus was designed to contain a large amount of speech produc...

This study investigates the relative effects of talker-specific variation and dialect-based variation on speech intelligibility. Listeners from two dialects of American English performed speech-in-noise tasks with sentences spoken by talkers of each dialect. An initial statistical model showed no significant effects for either talker or listener dialect group, and no interaction. However, a mix...
متن کاملDurational and spectral differences in American English vowels: dialect variation within and across regions.
Spectral differences among varieties of American English have been widely studied, typically recognizing three major regionally diagnostic vowel shift patterns [Labov, Ash, and Boberg (2006). This p...

The current study examined the role of native language on the perceptual similarity space of regional dialect variation. Native and non-native speakers of American English were asked to group a set of talkers by regional dialect in a free classification task. The two listener groups exhibited similar dialect classification strategies and perceptual similarity structures. However, the non-native...
